A-Rod homers twice as Yanks beat Rays 5-4

Alex Rodriguez

The Tampa Bay Rays were back home at Tropicana Field on Friday night to start a three game home stand against the division rival New York Yankees. The Yankees sent RHP Adam Warren (ERA 4.82) to the mound against RHP Nate Karns (ERA 4.58) of the Rays. As the Rays looked to continue the momentum they gained in their series win against the Blue Jays, the Yankees were looking to gain momentum and break the trend they began in Baltimore.

With help from some homers and clutch hits, the Yankees were able to get the 5-4 win in the first game of the series.
Alex Rodriguez hit two homers on the night, the first a solo in the top of the second off of Karns for an early 1-0 lead for New York. Stephen Drew hit a solo home run of his own in the top of the 4th for a 2-0 Yankees’ lead.

In the bottom of the 4th the Rays’ Allan Dykstra hit his first Major League homerun off of Warren with Evan Longoria and Desmond Jennings on base putting Tampa Bay up 3-2. Logan Forsythe then proceeded with a solo homerun on a fly ball to center to put the Rays up 4-2.

Warren pitched four innings, allowing six hits and four runs; striking out two. RHP Esmil Rogers (ERA 2.79) then pitched a clean 5th and 6th for the Yanks, striking out two.

Karns pitched five innings allowing two hits and two runs; striking out seven batters.

In the top of the 6th, the Yankees’ tied things up at 4 after walking Brian McCann, Tampa Bay’s Ernesto Frieri allowed a two run homer by Rodriguez, his second of the night. But, A-Rod wasn’t done just yet.
Carlos Beltran started off the eighth inning with a single on a ground ball to left. The Yankees’ would then send Brett Gardner to pinch-run for Beltran. After Gardner steals second, Rodriguez hit a RBI single on a line drive to center to put New York up 5-4. He would finish the night 3 for 4 with four RBIs.

Rodriguez now has 558 homeruns, 5th on the Homerun Leader Board, just two behind Willie Mays.

Honorable Mention:
Steven Souza Jr.: 2 for 4
Logan Forsythe: 2 for 3; RBI

Coming Up Next:
The Yankees and Rays will be back at Tropicana Field on Saturday night at 7:00pm with Yankees’ RHP Masahiro Tanaka (ERA 7.00) taking the start against the Rays’ RHP Jake Odorizzi (ERA 0.61)
