On a day when the Toronto Blue Jays lost to the Boston Red Sox 11-4, the Yankees found a way to stay within a half game of the division lead with an exciting 8-6 victory over the Orioles.
The Yankees jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Chris Young hit an RBI single scoring Chase Headley.
But the Orioles struck back in the top of the second with four runs of their own highlighted by a three run shot off the bat of Jonathan Schoop.
In the bottom of the third the Yankees answered with another run on an RBI double from Young scoring Headley. In the fifth Alex Rodriguez hit his 29th homer on the season (683 overall) to pull the Bronx Bombers within one at 4-3.
Then John Ryan Murphy gave the Yanks their first lead at 5-4, on a two-run shot to right field scoring Greg Bird.
In the top of the seventh, Manny Machado tied the game at 5-5, with a solo homer, number 27 on the season.
In the bottom half of the inning, Bird hit a line drive home run over the right center field fence, scoring both Carlos Beltran and Young to put the Yanks up for good at 8-5.
A small rally in the top of the ninth plated a run for the Orioles, but the Yankees closer Andrew Miller struck out Jimmy Paredes to end the game, while earning his 32nd save on the season.
The Yankees have an upcoming four-game set with the Division Leading Jays, but first have to take care of the Orioles in the next two games.
Another AL East race coming down to the wire….stay tuned.
