The Oakland A’s are at the bottom of the American League West and ten games under .500 at 29-39 and 10.5 games out of first, but are showing a few signs of hope.
On Wednesday they brought out the sticks and pounded 20 hits en-route to a 16-2 trouncing of the San Diego Padres.
In the bottom of the first Billy Burns led off with a line drive double to right field, then scored on a one-out single by Ben Zobrist. After a Stephen Vogt strike out, Billy Butler hit a three run home run to put the A’s up 4-0.
The A’s added a run in the bottom of the third when Zobrist tripled and scored on a sac fly by Vogt.
The Padres Alexi Amarista hit his second home run of the season in the top of the sixth to put San Diego on the board. But Oakland responded with 11 runs in two innings (4 in the 7th and 7 in the 8th) highlighted by a two-run doubles by Zobrist and Brett Lawrie.
San Diego managed one other run in the top of the eighth, on Will Middlebrooks ninth home run of the season, but it was not enough as the A’s ran away with the game.
