Braves Sign Free Agent Gomes

The Atlanta Braves and free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes have reached an agreement on a one-year deal.  According to Yahoo sports, there is a vesting option for the 2016 season.

The right-hand hitting Gomes will join a Braves team that has undergone some changes this offseason.  He is entering his 13th year in the big leagues and has played for five different teams, most recently the Oakland A’s.  Gomes was a part of the trade that sent Jon Lester from Boston to Oakland at the trade deadline last season.

Gomes, 34, according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, will split time in right field with Zolio Almonte presumably against left-handed pitching.  In his career he has an average of .244 with 155 home runs.  He does bring a World Series ring with him to Atlanta that he won as a member of the Red Sox.

It is a little confusing to the direction the Braves are trying to go.  They have made some trades shipping some veteran players out for prospects and then have signed other veterans.  No matter what happens, Braves GM John Hart is making his mark on this team.
