Dispatch From Red Sox Fantasy Camp, Day Three
- Updated: January 23, 2015
Day three in the 2015 Official Boston Red Sox Fantasy Camp consisted of five pool play games at 9:30 AM to set the final standings prior to the start of the camp playoffs which began at 1:00 PM.
After breakfast and the regular morning meeting, my first game was Gedman’s Bombers, coached by Rich Gedman with able assistance from Dick Beradino and Dave Smith against Nixon’s Dirtdogs, skippered by Trot Nixon and Brian Daubach. Daubach is currently a minor league manager in the Washington Nationals system.
Gedman’s Bombers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and led the early going, but the Dirtdogs gradually chipped away and eventually won the game 6-5, with a walk off two run single by Eduardo Vasquez of Caracas, Venezuela.
No special guest at lunch this day as the camp staff, coaches and players were all preparing for the start of the playoffs in the afternoon.
Camp standings through the first five pool play games were as follows:
Ted Williams Division
Nixon’s Dirtdogs 3-2 (top seed)
Gedman’s Bombers 3-2 (second seed)
Hobson’s Heroes 2-3 (third seed)
Timlin’s Timbers 2-3 (fourth seed)
Wins and Saves 2-3 (fifth Seed)
Carl Yastrzemski Division
Monty’s Mavericks 4-1 (top seed)
Miller Time 3-2 (second seed)
Stanley’s Steamers 3-2 (third seed)
Corsi’s Fireballers 2-3 (fourth seed)
Rico’s Roughnecks 1-4 (fifth seed)
Game locations were based on seeding, however the two teams (Hobson’s Heroes and Wins and Saves) who gave up their stadium game so the field could be readied for Wednesday’s home run derby were guaranteed a stadium playoff game.
The playoffs are very important to the fantasy camp week structure. In addition to the camp championship (top two teams) held in JetBlue Stadium on Friday night, the final standings also determine the order in which the camp teams play the Red Sox pros on Saturday.
In my first playoff game, Hobson’s Heroes took a 4-0 lead over Gedman’s Bombers, but the Bombers battled back to win 6-5 and will play Nixon’s Dirtdogs in the next round.
A possibility of rain will move half of Saturday’s action to Friday afternoon.
