Dodgers Beat Padres Late On Rollins Homer

The San Diego Padres were the one team this off-season that totally revamped their offense to give themselves a chance to finally compete for a National League West Division crown.

On Monday they started their quest against division rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and their new ace, James Shields on the mound facing reigning NL MVP Clayton Kershaw.

The Padres quickly got on the board in the top of the first, when former Dodger Matt Kemp hit an RBI single scoring Wil Myers, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Shields held the Dodgers scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Adrian Gonzalez led off with a home run to right field to tie the game at 1-1. Howie Kendrick then tripled and he scored on a Carl Crawford double to right field to make it a 2-1 game.

In the top of the fifth, the Padres would retake the lead 3-2, when Kemp hit a two-out double scoring Clint Barmes and Derek Norris, who both reached base on hits of their own.

The Dodgers struck again and tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, when Gonzalez hit a two-out double to right field and scored on an RBI double by Kendrick.

With two man on and one out in the bottom of the eighth, 36-year old Jimmy Rollins played hero, as he battled and launched the eighth pitch of the at bat over the right field wall, scoring Joc Pederson and Andre Ethier to put the Dodgers in the lead for good. The Padres would only manage one hit after scoring in the fifth and fall to the Dodgers 6-3.
