Game of the Week: Cardinals vs. Cubs Preview


Finally Opening Day is here and we kick it off with the St. Louis Cardinals against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field with first pitch scheduled for 8:05 pm.


Starting Sunday night, the Cubs and Cardinals will meet for the 2,346th time overall, with the Cubs holding a slim margin in the series with a record of 1189-1136.


CardinalsAdam Wainwright, RHP (0-0, 0.00)

Wainwright comes into the 2015 season with a career record of 119-66, and a 3.01 ERA. He is a 3-time all star, a World Series Champion and finished in the top three for the Cy Young award in four of the last five seasons. In his career against the Cubs, Wainwright is 3-1, 3.38 ERA, with 27 strike outs in 32.0 innings. He is starting his fourth Opening Day for the Red Birds which ties him with Bob Forsch, and Flint Rhem for third behind Chris Carpenter (5), Dizzy Dean (5). Bob Gibson leads all with 10 Opening Day starts for the Cardinals.

CubsJon Lester, LHP (0-0, 0.00)

Lester, who will pitch for a National League club for the first time, comes with with a career record of 116-67, and a 3.58 ERA. He is a 3-time all star, a 2-time World Series Champion and has finished in the top four of the Cy Young award twice in his career. This will be the first time that Lester faces the Cardinals and starter Wainwright, since the 2013 World Series, when he went 2-0, with a 0.59 ERA, allowing only one run on nine hits, and striking out 15 in 15.1 innings. Lester looks to get the Cubs started on the right track in 2015.
