Game Of The Week: Marlins vs. Reds June 21st



The Miami Marlins and the Cincinnati Reds will be facing off this upcoming weekend with the first game scheduled for Friday June 19 at 7:10 pm, followed by Saturday June 20th at 7:10 pm.

Our Game of the Week will feature a Father’s Day match-up on Sunday June 21st, with first pitch scheduled for 1:10 pm.


The Reds and Marlins will face-off for the first time this season with Cincinnati owning a 101-73 edge over Miami.

The Reds are 28-35, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and are currently in fourth place in the NL Central Division and trail the first place St. Louis cardinals by 14 games. They are 17-13 at home, and 11-21 on the road.  Their offense is first in the NL with 66 stolen bases, second with 74 Home runs, third with 201 walks.

The Marlins are 28-37, 5-5 in their last 10 games and are currently in fourth place in the NL East Division and trail the first place New York Mets by 6.5 games. They are 15-17 at home and 12-20 on the road. They are tied for first with 14 triples, and fourth with 577 hits.


Reds manager Bryan Price is in his second season as skipper.  He earned his first victory on 4/2/14 against the St. Louis Cardinals. He served as a pitching coach for four seasons under Dusty Baker and his previous experience had him leading the Mariners (2000-2005) and the Diamondbacks (2006-2009) pitching staff.

In 2014, he led the team to a fourth place finish at 76-86 and this season so far the team is 25-35 and also in fourth place.

Marlins manager Dan Jennings, who also serves as the teams General Manager, took over the squad in early May after skipper Mike Redmond was let go. Jennings, who has no prior experience running the show on the field, served as an MLB scout starting in 1986 and took over as the Marlins GM starting in 2013. So far this season he is 12-15 since taking over the job, as Redmond was 16-22 when the team fired him.

Last Season

In 2014 the Reds finished 76-86, in fourth place and 14 games out first and 12 games out of the Wild Card hunt.  Todd Frazier led the team with 29 home runs and was tied for second with Devin Mesoraco with 80 RBI. Billy Hamilton led the team and finished second in the National League with 56 stolen bases. Johnny Cueto won 20 games, with a 2.25 ERA and 242 strike outs and Aroldis Chapman with his 100+ MPH fastball saved 36 games.

The 2014 Marlins finished 77-85, in fourth place and 19 games out of first and 11 games out of the Wild Card hunt. Giancarlo Stanton led the team with 36 home runs and 105 RBI’s. Steve Cishek was the top pitcher on their staff with 39 saves.

Top Prospect

The Reds Top Prospect right handed pitcher Robert Stephenson is currently in his second Double-A season with a 3-6 record, and a 3.86 ERA, with 76 strikeouts in 12 games for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

The Marlins Top Prospect right handed pitcher Tyler Kolek is currently in his second season in pro ball and was promoted from the rookie league in 2014 to Class-A Advanced for the 2015 season. In 12 starts in Class-A, Kolek is 4-2, with a 4.42 ERA, with 55 strikeouts in 75 innings.
