Game of the Week: Rays vs Orioles Preview

As the season moves right along, the “visiting” Tampa Bay Rays square off against the Baltimore Orioles in the rubber game of their three-game series.  The Game of the Week for Legends on Deck, game is being played in Tampa, but the Orioles are the home team due to the series being located.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:35pm est at Tropicana Field.

The Series so Far

Alex Colome made his first start of the season for the Rays on Friday and was real good.  He may not have lasted as long as he or the Rays would have hoped, but in the five innings of work he allowed just three hits while striking out six, with no walks or runs allowed.  It was enough for his first win of the season as Tampa defeated Baltimore 2-0.

Chris Tillman got the ball for Baltimore and was pretty good on his own right, but the two-run fourth inning by Tampa was too much to recover from.  Tillman lost his third game of the season, and Baltimore’s three-game winning streak was ended.

The Rays bullpen did an outstanding job allowing just one more base runner the rest of the way.  Brad Boxberger had a perfect ninth striking out the side and recording his sixth save of the season along the way.

Baseball is a funny game that is very hard to understand.  The only way to describe events from day-day is “that’s baseball”.  The tables turned on Saturday as the series would be evened up at a game apiece thanks to and outstanding pitching performance by Orioles’ starter Miguel Gonzalez.  Gonzalez, who lost his last outing to the Red Sox, went a season-high 7.2 innings, allowing just four hits and a walk, while striking out six enroute to his third win of the season.

Chris Archer, who was looking for his fourth win of the season struggled with getting hitters out, whether it be by base hits or free passes.  Archer went six innings, but allowed six hits and walked four and was on the hook for the loss.

Chris Davis‘ RBI single in the Orioles’ three-run third was all the offense Baltimore needed.  They would get some insurance runs eventually winning the game 4-0.  Steven Pearce and Caleb Joseph would add the other three runs in the Orioles 11th win of the season.

Game of the Week: Starting Pitchers

Tampa – Nate Karns (1-1, 4.76)

Karns is making his sixth start this season for the Rays.  This will be his 11th start in the major leagues over three seasons.  He has a career record of 2-3 with an ERA of 5.33.  Karns faced the New York Yankees his last time out and lasted just 4.2 innings in a no-decision.  His last win came on April 12th against the Miami Marlins in a seven-inning effort.  This will be the second time this season that he is facing the Baltimore Orioles.  It is unsure how much longer he will be in the rotation once some of the other Rays’ starters return from injury.

Baltimore – Wei-Yin Chen (0-1, 2.78)

Chen is making his fifth start of the season and is still looking for his first win.  The lefty from Taiwan is making his 91st major league start, and owns a career record of 35-25 with an ERA of 3.81.  Chen had a coming of age season in 2014 where he picked up 16 wins and logged 185.2 innings in the Orioles march to the American League Championship Series.  Baltimore is 2-2 in Chen’s starts this season, and he is hoping to build on the eight-inning performance he had last time out against the Boston Red Sox.  This is Chen’s second start this season against that Rays where he matched up against Karns.
