Game Of The Week Recap: Twins Defeat Tigers 7-1
- Updated: July 13, 2015
The Minnesota Twins came into the four game series with the Detroit Tigers after starting the month of July winning 5 of the first 8 games, while keeping pace with the first place Kansas City Royals.
On Thursday the Tigers took the first game 4-2. Then on Friday the Tigers looked to be in control with Justin Verlander on the mound and after he was taken out after tossing 7.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out six, and the team leading the Twins 6-0, the Tigers bullpen did the unthinkable, by allowing eight runs in two innings (1 in the 8th, 7 in the 9th), capped off by a walk-off three-run home run off the bat of All-Star Brian Dozier.
On Saturday the Twins took an early 7-0 lead after three innings and didn’t look back as they would pull away for a 9-5 victory.
On Sunday the Twins were looking for the series victory and also keep pace with the scorching red-hot Royals, as they sent Kyle Gibson to the mound against the Tigers starter Shane Green.
After a scoreless top of the first, the Twins struck first with two runs rookie Miguel Sano‘s two-run home run to put the Twins up early 2-0.
In the top of the second, the Tigers answered right back by pulling within a run, on a ground out by Marc Krauss scoring J. Martinez. The Detroit offense would take the day off the rest of the way.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Twins put up a four-spot highlighted by an Aaron Hicks RBI single, Danny Santana‘s two-run triple, and Dozier’s sac fly to extend the Twins lead to 6-1. They added their final run in the bottom of the fifth on Trevor Plouffe‘s 11th home run on the season.
The Twins bullpen took over and shutout the Tigers from the third through the ninth to secure the 7-1 Twins victory and at the break they are 49-40 and 4.5 out of first and the Tigers drop to 44-44 and nine games out of first.
