Game of the Week: Rockies vs. Dodgers Preview

Week three of the season comes to an end on Sunday as the Colorado Rockies face-off against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium for the final game of their three game series, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:10 pm.

The Rockies and Dodgers, came into this weekend with Colorado in first place by a game and the Dodgers on a four game win streak.

On Friday, the Dodgers got the best of the Rockies 7-3, to extend their winning streak to five games. Kyle Kendrick (1-2) took the loss as he went up against Clayton Kershaw (1-1). Kendrick was pulled after just 4.2 innings, as he gave up six runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out six. Kershaw on the other hand earned the victory after he threw six innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits, walking one and striking out 12.

On the offensive side, Troy Tulowitzki and Charlie Blackmon both homered in the loss and for the Dodgers, Adrian Gonzalez was 3 for 4, with three runs scored and two RBI’s and Howie Kendrick was 2 for 4, with three RBI’s and his first home run on the season.

On Saturday, with both teams tied for first at 7-3, the Rockies looked to stop the Dodgers win streak and hold on to first place. They sent Jordan Lyles to the mound against the Dodgers Zack Grienke. Lyles lasted six innings, allowing four runs on five hits, walking five and striking out five. Greinke was pulled with two outs in the seventh inning after giving up a two-run home run to Blackmon to pull the Rockies within one, 4-3. Grienke finished the game allowing three runs on five hits, walked one and struck out three.

The Rockies struck first with a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Troy Tulowitzki scoring Blackmon who doubled to lead-off the inning. But the Dodgers added a run in both the second and third inning and two more in the fifth and seventh to pull away with a 6-3 victory and take over first place at 8-3.

The Dodgers were led by Howie Kendrick with two doubles in four at bats and Adrian Gonzalez with three RBI’s.  As for the Rockies, third baseman DJ LeMahieu homered and drove in two runs for their only offensive explosion of the night.

Both teams will battle it out again on Sunday, with the Rockies looking to regain first place and the Dodgers looking for their seventh win in a row and add to their grip on the lead.

Starters

Rockies – Eddie Butler, RHP (1-0, 1.64)

Butler has only logged five starts in the majors in two seasons, with three in 2014 and two so far this season.  On Sunday, Butler will look to help his teammates halt the Dodgers win streak. Butler is 1-0 in 2015, with a 1.64 ERA, allowing only two runs on nine hits, striking out six, but walking 10 batters in 11 innings. In Butler’s history against the Dodgers, he is 0-1, with a 9.90 ERA in two starts coming in 2014.

Dodgers – Brandon McCarthy, RHP (1-0, 6.75)

McCarthy, who is in his first season with the Dodgers, is pitching in his 10 major league season. In 2015 so far, he has two starts posting 1-0 record, with a 6.75 ERA, allowing nine runs on 15 hits, six home runs, and 19 strike outs in 12 innings. In his career against the Rockies, McCarthy is 2-1, with a 4.10 ERA, over four starts. McCarthy looks to keep the Dodgers win streak alive and surge into first place.
