Game of the Week: Royals vs. Tigers Preview

The American League Central rival Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers will go head to head in a rubber match at Comerica Park on Sunday night, for Legend on Deck’s Game of the Week. In the first game of the series on Friday night, LHP David Price allowed a career high thirteen hits and left the game with a hamstring injury after stepping on a bat while covering home plate. The Tigers then pulled off the win in walk off fashion after a throwing error off of Ian Kinsler‘s fourth hit of the game put the Detroit up 6-5. RHP Anibal Sanchez, took the start in the second game of the series on Saturday afternoon, and although he used to have the reputation of strong starts against the Royals, allowed nine hits and five earned runs in his six innings on the mound as the Tigers fell 6-2. So, now it’s on to the series finale that will either extend the Royals’ 1/2 game lead in the division or keep the Tigers right in the mix.

The Matchup:

With Jason Vargas  still out, the Kansas City Royals will look to RHP Chris Young (2-0) for another emergency start on Sunday night. Young has a 3-0 record along with a 1.41 ERA against the Tigers and in his last outing this season went five innings with no runs allowed. If for some reason Young isn’t ready to go, Kansas City will send LHP Danny Duffy to the mound. As for the Tigers, they will send RHP Shane Greene (3-2) to work on Sunday night. Greene hasn’t faced the division rivals yet this season yet, but he did as a Yankee last season when he went 5 innings allowing 5 hits, no earned runs and struck out five. Greene’s first season as a Tiger started nearly flawless going 3-0 in his first three appearances, going at least seven innings in each and and allowed just one earned run in 23 innings with an 0.39 ERA. His last three starts however have told a different story as he has allowed 23 hits for 20 runs and walking nine batters in just eleven innings and has raised his ERA to 5.56. Sunday night, he will look for redemption and find the groove he had just a few weeks back.
