- Updated: July 17, 2016
The Miami Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals opened the second half of the season on Friday, with both teams within striking distance of first place within their respective divisions.
The Marlins entered the series tied with the New York Mets in second place and seven games behind the Washington Nationals in the NL East, as for the Cardinals, they were in second place in the NL Central Division and eight games behind the Chicago Cubs.
During Friday’s game, the Marlins, already winners of three straight games, took advantage and battled back twice from a 4-1 and 6-5 deficit to steal Game one, 7-6 and extend their winning streak to four games.
But game two belonged to the Cardinals as starter Adam Wainwright threw a complete game 3-hit 5-0 shutout to earn his ninth win on the season and tie up the series at a game a piece.
On Sunday, the Marlins will send left hander Adam C0nley (6-5, 3.62) to the mound against Cardinals Michael Wacha (5-7, 4.36).
Both teams are looking to stay in the playoff mix as the Marlins are tied with the Mets for the second Wild Card spot and the Cardinals are just one game back.
