Game Of The Week: Braves Top Pirates 2-1

The Pittsburgh Pirates went into Sunday’s series finale against the Atlanta Braves looking for the series sweep. But,  Alex Wood (5-5, 3.17) and the Braves were able to prevent that from happening as they took the 2-1 victory.

The scoreboard remained blank until the top of the 5th when Atlanta’s Nick Markakis  hit a RBI single off of Pittsburgh’s Jeff Locke (4-4, 4.55) to send Cameron Maybin home and make it a 1-0 game.

Locke didn’t allow a hit by the Braves until the fourth inning and was quite solid against the Braves, the team that drafted him, traded him and one he has struggled against in six career starts.

Locke pitched five innings allowing five hits and one run; walking three and striking out five.

Wood pitched seven and a third scoreless  innings allowing five hits and striking out eight.

The Braves added to their lead with a solo homerun by Jace Peterson, his third of the year, on a fly ball to right center field for a 2-0 ballgame.

In the bottom of the ninth the Pirates finally got on the board with a RBI double by Jordy Mercer off of Jason Grilli (ERA 3.14) on a sharp fly ball to center field to send Francisco Cervelli  home.

Wood earned the win and Grilli earned the save after pitching the ninth inning allowing one hit and the only run by the Pirates, while striking out one.
