Game Of The Week: Braves Vs. Pirates Preview 1:35pm ET



The Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates will conclude their weekend three game series on Sunday afternoon at PNC Park. The Pirates are currently winning the series two games to nothing and will look to get the series sweep. On Friday night the Pirates took a 3-2 victory in ten innings. Francisco Liriano (ERA 3.21) walked home the first run of the  game for a Braves 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the 5th the Pirates took a 2-1 lead with a two run single by Pedro Alvarez. The Braves’ Juan Uribe then hit a solo homer on a fly ball to tie the game at two runs a piece in the top of the 6th. Liriano pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs, walking three and striking out three. The Braves’ starting pitcher Williams Perez (ERA 2.88) pitched just four and two thirds allowing four hits and two runs; striking out two and walking two and would have to leave the game in the fifth inning after taking a sharp ground ball to the foot, on Saturday he was then placed on the 15 Day DL with a  bruised foot. The Pirates secured the win with a walk-off double by Jordy Mercer to send Andrew McCutchen home.

In the second game of the series Pittsburgh took the 8-4 win which was started with a five run lead in the bottom of the first off of Atlanta’s RHP Julio Teheran (4.94, 5-4). The runs were scored first by a RBI single by Starling Marte, and then a two run double by Pedro Alvarez, a RBI single by Francisco Cervelli and a RBI singly by Jordy Mercer.In the top of the 3rd, a RBI single by Nick Markakis off of RHP Charlie Morton (6-1, 4.28) to send Cameron Maybin home put the Braves on the board. In the bottom of the 5th, Starling Marte stole home to make it a 6-1 ballgame. But, a three run double by Jace Perterson decreased the lead to a 6-4 ballgame, the Pirates still were able to increase their lead with a RBI double Cervelli and then a RBI single by Mercer for a 8-4 game.


Atlanta Braves:

LHP Alex Wood (3.44, 4-5)  will take the start for the Braves in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. In Wood’s last start against the Nationals on Tuesday, he allowed a 2015 season high of ten hits. In four of his seven starts he went seven innings and has brought down his ERA by nearly a point.

Pittsburgh Pirates:

LHP Jeff Locke will take the mound against the team who originally drafted him in the second round in  2006. He has had five career starts with a 6.08 ERA against the Braves. In his last start on Tuesday against the Reds he allowed four runs- two earned- in just four innings.
