Game of the Week: Dodgers Hernandez Has Himself A Night

Dodgers 7, Giants 3.

Kershaw, W (2-0), Bumgarner, L (1-1). The Dodgers improve to 7-4 while the Giants lose their third straight, falling to 6-5. Enrique Hernandez was Player of the Game with a 3-for-5, two HR, four RBI evening.

The Dodgers celebrated Jackie Robinson Day with the late Hall of Famer’s widow Rachel, daughter Sharon, Don Newcombe and Hall of Famer Frank Robinson on hand for pre-game ceremonies.

The applause from the ceremonial first pitch had scarcely subsided when, after a spotless first inning by Clayton Kershaw (7 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 0 BB), Dodgers left fielder Enrique Hernandez hit Madison Bumgarner‘s first offering of the game over the wall in left-center field.

Bumgarner, who reached on a single, scored from third in the top of the third inning on a Kershaw wild pitch with the bases loaded. After Joe Panik popped out, Hernandez laid out and snared a Buster Posey line drive to end the frame with minimal damage.

Just getting started, Hernandez crushed a 2-0 pitch from Bumgarner with bases empty in the bottom of the third, depositing it in the left field seats for his second round-tripper of the game.

In the fourth inning, errors by shortstop Kelby Tomlinson and second baseman Joe Panik sustained a four-run Dodgers rally. Rookie shortstop Charlie Culberson singled in two runs and then – who else? – Hernandez drove in two more with a double down the left field foul line.

The Giants scored two in the sixth when Kershaw uncorked his second wild pitch of the game with runners on second and third. Angel Pagan scored, then Hunter Pence drove in Joe Panik with a single.

Charlie Culberson completed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth by knocking in A.J. Ellis following the catcher’s double. Giants Manager Bruce Bochy pulled Bumgarner (5 IP, 7 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 7 K, 1 BB) after Kershaw punched a swinging bunt past drawn-in third baseman Matt Duffy.

For Enrique Hernandez, 10 total bases against Bumgarner is outstanding but hardly surprising. As reported by ESPN Stats & Info, the Dodgers outfielder is 10 for 16 lifetime against MadBum, with seven extra base hits.

The series continues tonight with the Dodgers Scott Kazmir (1-0) squaring off against Johnny Cueto (2-0) for the Giants.
