Game of the Week: Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets Preview

This week’s “Game of the Week” will take place on Friday, May 27th at 7:10 PM. This will begin a three game series between two clubs battling to move up the standings in their respective divisions. The Los Angeles Dodgers (25-23) will travel to Citi Field to take on the New York Mets (27-19).

Los Angeles Dodgers vs New York Mets

Los Angeles is four and a half games behind the San Francisco Giants for the lead in the NL West. The Mets trail the Washington Nationals by a half game for the NL East division lead. Friday will be the first game of the series with two other games to be played on Saturday and Sunday.

The Mets have been fun to watch in the home run department this season. New York is currently tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for the MLB lead hitting 66 home runs in 46 games. The Mets have a 13-8 record at home so far this season and have gone 6-4 in their last 10 games. Meanwhile, through 48 games the Dodgers have the sixth-lowest team ERA in MLB which stands at 3.51. Los Angeles has a 12-11 road record this season and have gone 5-5 in their last ten games.

Probable Pitching Matchup

LHP Alex Wood: Wood has a 1-3 record this season. His last win was on April 13th against the Arizona Diamondbacks where he allowed five hits and one run in seven innings. Wood arrived in Los Angeles through a three team and 13 player trade last season. The 25-year-old spent three seasons with the Atlanta Braves before he was acquired by the Dodgers. Wood has career record of 27-29 and a 3.38 overall ERA.

RHP Jacob deGrom: While he allowed three runs in a 5-3 loss to the San Diego Padres, deGrom is in the midst of another strong season. The 27-year-old has 3-1 record so far this season and a 3.07 ERA in 41.0 innings pitched. He has 30 strike outs on the year and a 1.24 WHIP. Citi Field has been the setting for two of deGrom’s three wins this season – his last victory was a 6-5 win on April 30th against the San Francisco Giants.

Storylines of the Series

Yoenis Cespedes has been a major part of the Mets’ offense this season. He leads MLB with 15 home runs and his 36 RBIs ranks him third behind Seattle’s Robinson Cano and Boston’s David Ortiz who hold down the first and second RBI ranks respectively. The Mets have just 18 errors on the season which is tied with the Washington Nationals for the fewest in MLB.

Dodgers’ 22-year-old SS Corey Seager has seven home runs, 23 RBIs, and a .269 AVG. Meanwhile, CF Joc Pederson has 8 home runs, 22 RBIs and a .254 AVG. Chase Utley leads Los Angeles with a .291 AVG.

**PITCHING UPDATE

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Thursday, May 26th that the team has called up 19-year-old pitcher Julio Urias and he will make his MLB debut against the New York Mets on Friday evening. Urias is a highly touted prospect who has played for Los Angeles’ Triple-A affiliate Oklahoma City Dodgers this season. Urias has 1.10 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, 44 strikeouts and a 4-1 record in 2016 with Oklahoma City.
