Game Of The Week: Rangers Defeat Giants 2-1; Win Series

The Texas Rangers hosted the San Francisco Giants in the third and final game, a rubber match, of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Globe Life Park in Arlington. Newly acquired Mike Leake (3.52, 9-6) took the start for the Giants against Martin Perez (6.64, 1-2) of the Rangers who was looking to bounce back after a rocky last start against the New York Yankees where he allowed eight runs in a little more than an inning’s worth of work.

In the bottom of the first inning, Leake allowed both a single by Prince Fielder and a double by Adrian Beltre with two outs to put runners in scoring position but was able to get out of a jam when he struck out Mitch Moreland.

The game then turned into a pitcher’s duel as both Leake and Perez pitched four shutout innings until the Rangers took a two run lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two run blast from Josh Hamilton, his fifth of the season.

Leake went six and one third innings allowing two runs off of eight hits; walking two and striking out five batters.

In the top of the ninth the Giants were able to tack on a run after a RBI single by Buster Posey to score Angel Pagan., to no avail as they dropped to Texas 2-1; losing the series.

Perez did more than bounce back as he went eight and one third innings allowing just one run off of two hits, striking out six batters and earned his first win of the season advancing to (1-2).

Leake fell to (9-6) on the season and suffered his first loss as a member of the Giants, it will be interesting to see if he can rebound and have a productive month although in the past he has been known to struggle throughout the month of August.

The Texas Rangers are now 51-53 on the season, eight games back in the American League West, eight games behind the division leading Houston Astros.

The San Francisco Giants are now 57-47 on the season, two and a half games back in the National League West, behind the division leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
