Game Of The Week: Red Sox Vs. Angels Sunday Night Preview

The Boston Red Sox post-season dream are  slipping away, even though it is too soon to say that they are our of contention, it doesn’t look good as they stay in the bottom of the American League East seven games behind. The Sox looked to bounce back after All-Star break but in the first game back their dreams suddenly evaporated.

In Friday night’s series opener at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Boston’s LHP Wade Miley (4.49,8-8) took the start and took a perfect game into the sixth inning until LA’s Chris Ianneta walked with one out. The no-hitter continued until Kole Calhoun hit a leadoff double in the seventh. Miley pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit, two walks and struck out six batters.

LHP C.J. Wilson (3.59, 7-7) took the start for the Angels pitching eight innings with five hits and three walks allowed while striking out four and getting out a few jams along the way to prevent any runs from the Red Sox.

It was Boston’s closer RHP Koji Uehara (2-4, 2.67) that would start the bottom of the ninth for the Sox and with two out allowed a solo walk-off homerun by Angels’ star Mike Trout. Trout’s homerun led the Angels to 1-0 win and added to his resume of the week that included a homerun and MVP Award at the All-Star Game on Tuesday night at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.

The LA Angels finished the first half of the season just a half a game on top of the American League West Division ahead of the Houston Astros who have used their promising rookies to take control of the division for most of the season so far.

This weekend’s results will lead up to the series finale which will take place on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN at 8:00pm.

Boston Red Sox:

The Red Sox will send their rookie southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez (3.59, 5-2) to the mound against the Angels on Sunday night. Rodriguez has been a positive part of the struggling lineup so far this season. The 22 year old has gone at least six innings in six of his last nine starts so he most likely will be spending a good amount of time out there.

LA Angels:

The Angels will send LHP Hector Santiago (2.33, 6-4) for the start against the Red Sox. Santiago will be making his first appearance of the second half after being part of the  All-Star Game. His ERA is currently the third best in the American League this season and he looks to help the Angels try and make a post-season berth.
