Game Of The Week: Washington Nationals At Chicago Cubs Preview

This week’s “Game of the Week” could end up being one of the best four games sets of the season as the Washington Nationals (19-9) travel to Wrigley Field to take on the Chicago Cubs (21-6).

With two clubs atop the standings in their divisions and full of talent, this could be a rivalry in the making and something that fans will be eager to watch for years to come.

While each of these four games will be fun to watch, it seems that Friday afternoon’s matchup featuring the Nats’ RHP Max Scherzer (ERA 3.55, 3-1) and the Cubs’ RHP John Lackey (ERA 4.32, 3-1).

The Cubs took the first game of the series on Thursday night 5-2 and now the Nationals will need a strong outing by all to tie the series at a game a piece on Friday.

Pitching Matchup:

RHP Max Scherzer: Scherzer will look to get back to where he left off in his last start on Sunday afternoon as he takes the mound on Friday afternoon. In that last start he did earn the win while pitching seven innings of shutout baseball while allowing just four hits; striking out nine batters. The thirty-one year old is currently 3-1 in six starts; striking out thirty-nine batters in thirty-eight innings; allowing just fifteen earned runs.

RHP John Lackey: The thirty-seven year old Lackey, although sporting a high earned run average, is having a solid start to his first season with the Cubs. In five starts he is 3-1, allowing just sixteen earned runs in thirty three and a third innings. In his last start on Sunday afternoon against the Atlanta Braves, Lackey received a no-decision after eight innings of work, where he learned two runs off of three hits; striking out just two.
