New York Yankees first baseman and fourth best prospect, Greg Bird was called up to the Majors on Thursday morning and made his Major League Debut at Progressive Field, playing first base and batting seventh in the lineup as the Yankees took on the Cleveland Indians.

Although it was a day that Bird and Yankees’ fans have been waiting for, Bird would go 0 for 5 on the night. But, hope is not lost, Bird will be the backup for both first baseman Mark Teixeira and DH Alex Rodriguez as the Yankees are at the beginning of a sixteen game stretch as they travel to Toronto this weekend. The Yankees were able to break a five game losing streak with a 8-6 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

The 22 year old, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB Draft, has played the last 34 games with Triple-A Scranton where he was hitting .301, slugging .500.

In 2014 he won the Kevin Lawn Award for the Best Minor League Position Player in the Yankees’ Organization. Also in 2014 he played in the Arizona Fall League where he was named the AFL MVP.
