MLB.com is reporting that right-handed pitcher Ian Kennedy and the Kansas City Royals have agreed to a five year deal that is said to be worth $70 million. The veteran, who was originally drafted by the New York Yankees, has spent nine years in the Majors also playing with the Arizona Diamondbacks and most recently the San Diego Padres.
Kennedy had a rough 2015 season with a 9-13 record and a 4.28 ERA but was able to strike out 174 in 168 1/3 innings.
Kennedy’s addition to the reigning World Series Champions is a good move for both sides. With the loss of Johnny Cueto in the offseason to the San Francisco Giants, Kansas City needed another arm in their starting rotation. Kennedy has also spent the last few season with the D-backs and the Padres whose lineups aren’t as solid as Kansas City, a team that is known for keeping their team in the game all nine innings and achieving some wild comebacks.
