Legends On Deck’s Top 25 Prospects: No.’s 13-8

8. Carlos Rodon, LHP

Team: White Sox

Age: 22

Height: 6’3

Weight: 234

Bats/Throws: Left/Left

Coming into 2014, Rodon was the heavy favorite to be the first overall pick in the draft. However an inconsistent season in college placed some doubt in the heads of teams at the top and he eventually landed in the laps of the White Sox with the third pick. After being drafted he made a handful of starts. Overall he had nine appearances and six starts, with three of those starts coming in AAA. In 24.2 innings he pitched to a 2.92 ERA, struck out a whopping 38 batters and walked 13 while allowing 20 hits.

On the mound the N.C State product is a dominating physical presence with a massive lower half and excellent strength. He throws his fastball in the mid-90’s but can reach back for near triple digit velocity at times– an already plus pitch. However his biggest weapon is his slider, an 80-grade wipeout pitch that he throws in the mid-80’s. A true bat missing offering. He is also developing a changeup which needs a lot of work and currently sits below-average.

Outlook: Development of the changeup will be a key to Rodon’s development. If he can make the pitch usable he has ace potential. He’ll also have to stay on top of his mechanics which fail him sometimes, as well as his conditioning which scouts have questioned. I think being surrounded by major league coaching will ease those concerns.

Risk: Low. He’s going to be a good major league pitcher even if the change doesn’t develop much more. As high of a floor as you’ll find in a pitching prospect in my opinion.

ETA: 2015
