Legends On Deck’s Top 25 Prospects: No.’s 19-14

14. Julio Urias, LHP

Team: Dodgers

Age: 18

Height: 5’11

Weight: 160

Bats/Throws: Left/Left

The Dodgers really challenged Urias when they assigned him to the High-A Cal League, where he was over six years younger than the average league age. Urias continued to dominate, pitching 87.2 innings to the tune of a 2.36 ERA. He struck out 109 batters, walked only 37 and opposing batters hit a paltry .194 off of him.

The teenage Urias, who has been dubbed a “pitching savant” by Baseball Prospectus, has a filthy arsenal of pitches that all project as plus. His fastball, or fastballs I should say, come in anywhere from low to mid 90’s an vary from a cutter, to a sinker, to a more traditional fastball with some run. He throws a curveball that comes in from 78-81 and shows good bite. He sometimes throws it harder which gives a slider-like break. The changeup flashes potential but has been inconsistent. Package that all up with a smooth, easy delivery that has plenty of deception and control/command that’s far advanced for his age and you have a potential monster.

Outlook: Urias could easily be the top pitching prospect in baseball very soon. He has as much talent as any name on this list.

Risk: High. Innings have been limited by team, needs to show he can handle the workload. Needs exposure to upper levels.

ETA: 2016
