Legends on Deck’s Top 25 Prospects: No.’s 25-20

24. Raul Mondesi, Jr., SS

Team: Royals

Age: 19

Height: 6’1

Weight: 165

Bats/Throws: Both/Right

Mondesi struggled against the Sally league competition in 2014. However, at just 18 he was nearly five years younger than the average age for the league. When taking that into consideration, his .211/.256/.354 slash line is much easier to take. He did show more pop than scouts would have expected, hitting eight home runs, 14 doubles and legging out 12 triples. He also stole 17 bases on the season.

As the son of a former All-Star, Raul Jr. has baseball in his blood and it shows on the diamond. He has great instincts for the game. At the plate his ability to barrel the ball is well beyond his years, and has plus-plus bat speed. He has a tendency to swing and miss within the zone, leading to a lot of strikeouts. Scouts expect that he’ll develop solid-average power as he fills out. His standout tool is currently his defense, which is plus, with soft hands and quick reactions that are aided by his plus speed.

Outlook: Most scouts believe that as his body matures and catches up with his raw ability he’ll develop into an elite-level shortstop.

Risk: Very high. Still very young and raw. 2015 will be a telling season for his development.

ETA: 2017
