Legends on Deck’s Top 25 Prospects: No.’s 25-20

23. Blake Swihart, C

Team: Red Sox

Age: 22

Height: 6’1

Weight: 175

Bats/Throws: Both/Right

Swihart broke out in 2014 while playing in Double-A and eventually Triple-A. In 110 games he hit .293 with a .341 on-base to go along with his 13 home run and 26 doubles while handling catching duties. He also used his athleticism and instincts to swipe eight bases in nine attempts.

The former first-round pick has solid tools across the board for anyone, let alone a catcher. At the plate he shows the ability to spray the ball around the field from both sides, with most of his power coming from the right. He tends to be overly aggressive at times, which haven’t lead to strikeouts but making outs early in at-bats. Defensively he’s an above-average receiver and has a strong arm which should limit the opponents running game. On the basepaths he’s no burner, but he’s an above-average runner for a catcher and has good instincts.

Outlook: Swihart has all he tools to be an all-star caliber catcher at the major league level .

Risk: Low. Profile and position scarcity make him a virtual lock to be an everyday ML-er. Already has Triple-A experience.

ETA: 2015
