Legends on Deck’s Top 25 Prospects: No.’s 25-20

 21. Henry Owens, LHP

Team: Red Sox

Age: 22

Height: 6’6

Weight: 205

Bats/Throws: Left/Left

Owens built upon his excellent 2013 season by following it with another strong campaign in 2014. The big left-hander posted a 2.94 ERA in 159 innings, pitching mostly in Double-A before making a handful of starts at Triple-A. He struck out 170 batters in that span while walking 59 and allowing 121 hits.

The former first-round selection has a huge 6’6″ frame and an easy delivery that shows minimal effort. He throws his fastball 90-92 mph but it plays up due to excellent deception from his delivery and big, long appendages. The deception on his fastball only makes his best pitch, the change, that much harder to pick up. It’s a plus offering that eats up right-handed batters. His breaking ball is currently an average offering, showing some effectiveness versus lefties but certainly in need of some work before reaching the next level.

Outlook: Owens has little projection left, and currently looks to be a solid 2/3 starter. If he can tighten up the breaking ball he can be slightly more than that.

Risk: Low. He’s proved to be durable, throwing 159 innings in 2014, and has had success at the upper levels.
