Legends On Deck

LOD Daily Cactus Report 2/25/18

Things are heating up in Arizona as we get back into the swing of things with baseball. Here is a look around the Cactus League for Sunday February 25th.

Cubs 12 Giants 10

The Headline: Madison Bumgarner took the mound in his first Cactus League start of 2018 and he couldn’t quite make it out of his two scheduled innings. While he did retire five hitters via the strikeout, he also allowed three runs, two of them earned, on four hits.

Notable Hitter: Ian Happ went 2/2 on the day which included a first inning homer off of Bumgarner.

Notable Pitcher: Zach Hedges was the only Cubs pitcher that didn’t allow either multiple hits or a single run in the game.

White Sox 8 Reds (SS) 5

The Headline: Chicago posted a five run fourth inning without a single extra base hit. All five of the hits in the inning were singles.

Notable Hitter: Matt Davidson went yard in the fifth inning to cap of his 2/3, four RBI day.

Notable Pitcher: Luis Castillo got the start for the Reds and tossed two innings of one hit ball.

Rangers 4 Rockies 2

The Headline: There were some pretty good defensive plays on display in this one. Darwin Barney flashed the leather at short, Willie Calhoun made a great catch on the run, and Joey Gallo had a nice assist at the plate to end a Rockies threat.

Notable Hitter: Ryan Rua got the first run on the board when he went opposite field with a double off the right field wall to drive in Rougned Odor.

Notable Pitcher: Paolo Espino didn’t allow a base runner and struck out five over his two relief innings.

The Headline: Ties are boring, even in Spring Training. The Athletics went 1/11 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.

Notable Hitter: Jake Smolinski drilled a three run homer in the fourth, the Athletics only hit with RISP on the afternoon.

Notable Pitcher: 2016 first round draft pick A.J. Puk got the start on the mound for the Athletics. He tossed two scoreless innings and struck out one.

Indians 2 Reds (SS) 2

The Headline: See headline above… This half of the Reds split squad team featured a lot more of the regulars. In fact, both clubs in this game trotted out what seemed to be close to their starting lineups come opening day.

Notable Hitter: Tony Cruz replaced Joey Votto at first base in this game and ended up going 2/2 at the plate with a double while plating the Reds only two runs of the game.

Notable Pitcher: The Reds will be relying on veteran Homer Bailey heavily this season to anchor the rotation. He tossed a solid two innings today while striking out three and allowing just one hit.

The Headline: This was the first time the Seager brothers have played each other in a professional setting. Kyle went 2/2 and Corey went 0/3. The Dodgers only logged two hits on the day.

Notable Hitter: Ben Gamel had a triple and the lone RBI of the game.

Notable Pitcher: The Mariners pitching staff was outstanding as a whole today. The starter, Marco Gonzales, struck out four and walked one over his two innings.
