Shortstop– Andres Gimenez – 2017 Teams: Columbia Fireflies (Class-A Full Season)

2017 Statistics: .265/.346/.349, .695 OPS, 4 HR, 31 RBI, 92 G

When looking at the shortstop position, the New York Mets are very high on 19-year old Andres Gimenez, who was signed in 2015 as an International Free Agent. The Venezuelan prospect has moved quickly through the system jumping from the Dominican Summer League (Rookie) in 2016, straight to Class A Full Season is 2017.

In 62 games in 2016, Gimenez batted .350, with 112 hits, 20 doubles, four triples, three home runs, 38 RBIs, 46 walks, and 13 stolen bases. For the FireFlies this past summer, the Mets #3 overall prospect batted .265, with 92 hits, nine doubles, four triples, four home runs, 31 RBIs, 28 walks, and 14 stolen bases.

Coming from the Dominican Summer League, Gimenez exploded out the box in his first games in the United States, by hitting in his first five games straight, then put together a span when he hit safely in 16 of his first 20 games.

Based on scouting reports, Gimenez is not projected to hit for power, but has speed, a strong arm, and good range on the field.

The Mets already have Amed Rosario in the fold at shortstop, and even though Gimenez is years away from having the potential of reaching the big leagues, with his range and athleticism, he may one day become a great tandem with Rosario up the middle. It would mean moving over to second base, but that isn’t a move that should hurt his development, but probably expedite it to the majors.

Keep an eye on Gimenez as he continue to move through the Mets farm system in the upcoming season.

Other Notable Third Baseman to watch out for in 2018:

Luis Guillorme
