Mexico Shocks Canada 4-3, Advance To Premier 12 Semi-Finals

In the first semi-final game on Monday, Mexico took an early 1-0 lead on undefeated Canada in the first on an RBI single from catcher Humberto Sosa. Mexico’s starters shut down Canada for five innings until the sixth when Canada put up three runs to take a 3-1 lead.

But in the eighth inning, Mexico broke through with three of their own runs, on three hits and two errors to re-gain the lead at 4-3. Canada who has not lost a game in the tournament, couldn’t muster another hit after the run scoring sixth inning, as Mexico pitcher retired the last ten batters they faced.

Mexico received a good outing on the mound from starter Miguel Pena, once a prospect of the Boston Red Sox, as he tossed six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walking one and striking out two. The bullpen tossed three shutout innings combining for not hits and four strike outs.

Canada’s starter Scott Diamond, who last pitched in the majors with the Minnesota Twins in 2013, lasted seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits, with no walk and two strikeouts. But the bullpen did in Canada as Phillipee Aumont gave up three runs (one earned) in just 2/3 of an inning.

Mexico will now face the United States, who beat the Netherlands 6-1 to advance to the semi’s.
