Midwest League Opening Day Recap: Lake County 3, Dayton 1 (SUSP Top 4th – Rain)
- Updated: April 7, 2017
It was an unfortunate start to the 2017 season for many Midwest League teams and their fans as the countdown to opening day was delayed by one more day for eight teams. Half of the League’s games were postponed due to unsuitable playing conditions and our featured opening day game, Dayton vs. Lake County, was suspended in the top of the 4th for the same reason. There were still a few teams in action, get caught up on yesterday’s scores below.
Featured Game: Dayton Dragons vs. Lake County Captains SUSP
Lake County leads 3-1 in the top of the fourth.
This one, like a lot of opening day matchups, was expected to be a pitching battle and that is precisely what was taking shape through the first three innings. Lake County trotted out the 29th ranked prospect in the Indians organization, a 6’7 righty, Micah Miniard. Miniard was dealing through the first three innings.
He was getting his hard breaking curveball across for strikes and the Dayton hitters were having to adjust their approach because of it. With that being said, it was no easy day at the plate for the Captains either. Dayton sent their ace out to toe the rubber as the hard throwing Anthony Santillan, who is the Reds #15 prospect, took the mound for the home team. Santillan works fast from the rubber and has a very quick delivery. Those quick feet paid off in the second when he picked off back to back runners to end the inning.
Both pitchers gave up a solo homer in the first, including a shot off of the bat of Reds #5 prospect Taylor Trammell that sailed over the 402 sign in right-center, tying the game up at one a piece. Santillan got into a little bit of trouble in the top of the fourth, but made an excellent play with runners on second and third. He fielded a high chopper, held the runners, and threw out the batter at first on what could have easily been an RBI infield single. It looked like Santillan was going to get out of the fourth with minimal damage, but instead the grounds crew was called out to tend to the field and eventually pull out the tarp. The suspended game will be completed today, as well as the regularly scheduled game set for 7:00pm ET
