On Friday, Major League Baseball handed New York Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia with a permanent ban for failing his third PED test.

Mejia, who was currently serving 162-game ban handed out to him last July for testing positive to both stanozolol and boldenone, received the lifetime ban for testing positive to boldenone again. Last April he was initially given an 80-game suspension for testing positive for stanozolol.

Mets addressed the issue through a statement on Friday:

“We were deeply disappointed to hear that Jenrry has again violated Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. We fully support MLB’s policy toward eliminating performance enhancing substances from the sport. As per the Joint Drug Program, we will have no further comment on this suspension.”

The 26-year old right hander may apply for reinstatement to Commissioner Rob Manfred in one year, but will be required to sit out the minimum of two years before he is able to return to the majors.

Thoughts from David C.

As a fan I am extremely disappointed in finding out that he failed a third test and was looking forward to watching him help the Mets bullpen, but for someone who has had the opportunity to connect with Mejia and talk with him, I can only say that my prayers go out to him with the hopes that whatever it is that he is dealing with, that he is able to get the help he needs. It is very easy for me to sit here and judge him, but I am not in his shoes and living his life.  He is the one that has to deal with the ban and find a way to prove to his peers and teammates that he deserves the what has been given to him.

But I will never condone his actions or anyone that chooses to take risks especially when there are so many other ball players that are doing it the right way and not getting the opportunities that they deserve. Maybe this will finally give those players an open door to their dreams.
