MWL Game of the Week: Fort Wayne Comes Up Short at Home

The starting pitching got off to a hot start for both the hometown Fort Wayne TinCaps and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers as the teams only allowed two combined base runners and one hit through the first three innings. TinCaps starter Logan Allen and Timber Rattlers hurler Trey Supak continued to match each other into the fourth where they both gave up their first run of the evening. Timber Rattlers second baseman Jonathan Oquendo singled home Joantgel Segovia in the top of the fourth before the TinCaps Brad Zunica evened the score with an RBI single of his own in the bottom half of the frame.

Allen would make it through one more inning while surrendering two more runs in the fifth. That was it for the scoring until the ninth when Mario Feliciano singled home two runs in the top of the inning to add a couple of insurance runs and push the score to 5-1 in favor of the visiting Timber Rattlers. Zunica led off the bottom half of the ninth for the TinCaps with a double before Fernando Tatis Jr. eventually got him home on a triple. It was timely hitting as two of the TinCaps three extra base hits came in the ninth, but the comeback effort would be thwarted early as Tatis’ RBI triple proved to be the only run in the bottom of the frame, resulting in the final 5-2 score.

The TinCaps certainly had some struggles at the plate in this one. Every single player in the starting lineup except for two, Eguy Rosario and Marcus Greene Jr., had multi-strikeout games. This is more of a testament to Wisconsin’s pitching performance as Supak posted 11 stirkeouts through his 5 ⅔ innings. The bullpen would record five more, bringing the total number of TinCaps batters sat down via strikeout to 16. The Timber Rattlers would have a different set of struggles at the plate as they had no extra base hits, but ultimately got the job done.
