MWL Game of the Week: South Bend Gets Big Win in Playoff Push

The Midwest League season is winding down quickly and we have ourselves a playoff race for the wildcard spot in the Eastern Division. Just a few short days ago it looked like the Bowling Green Hot Rods had locked up the final second half playoff spot, but after a nine game Hot Rod losing streak, the South Bend Cubs have pulled within striking distance. They closed that gap a little bit more last night with their win over the Lake County Captains.

The scoring started early for the Cubs as lead off man Andruw Monasterio hit a solo homer to lead off the game for the home team. The long ball also accounted for the Cubs second run when center fielder DJ Wilson led off the fourth with a solo shot of his own.

With the exception of the two home runs allowed, Captains starting pitcher Micah Miniard was having a solid game on the mound through four innings. However, his good fortune would come to an end in the bottom of the fifth. Miniard got one out in the frame but was pulled after allowing four straight hits and four runs. He allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out four in his 4 1/3 innings of work on Monday night.

The Cubs took a 6-0 lead into the top of the sixth where the Captains would manage to cut the deficit in half. Cubs starter Manuel Rondon had cruised through five innings of his own, shutting out the visitors while allowing just four hits. He was unable to produce an out in the sixth and was pulled after allowing two hits and issuing a walk. Rondon would end up being charged with all three runs in the inning.

Both bullpens would lock things down as no more runs were produced on the night taking us to our 6-3 final and pulling the Cubs within just one game of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division. The Cubs have won 17 of their last 20 games and have an off day on Tuesday before opening up a three game home series with the first place West Michigan Whitecaps. Coincidentally, the Cubs final three games of the season will come on the road against Bowling Green.
