Cabrera, 28, was non-tendered by his former club, the San Diego Padres, earlier this winter. During his time in San Diego he showed signs of promise on the field. It was the off the field stuff that became an issue. Cabrera had to serve a 50-game suspension after it was found that he used PED’s, and he is still awaiting the fate of a resisting arrest charge that could land him in jail.
Despite all of that, the Orioles took a chance and hope that the former All-Star can get his game back to where it looked like it was heading before all of this. Baltimore already has J.J. Hardy playing short stop, so the thought is Cabrera will compete for the second base position or just fill a utility role. In 2013, Cabrera hit .283 with 37 stolen bases.
