Nova started the 2016 season as a member of the New York Yankees and went 4-6 with an ERA of 4.90 in 15 starts. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates at the deadline and seemed to really turn things around. Nova made 11 starts for the Bucs and went 5-2 with an ERA of 3.06.
The Pirates as starting to be known as a destination for struggling pitchers who want to get their careers back on track. J.A. Happ was the most recent success story who shined after being acquired by the Pirates from the Seattle Mariners at the 2015 deadline. Happ turned his success into a multi-year deal the following season.
There are also reports that the Pirates are still interested in acquiring Chicago White Sox starter Jose Quintana which would certainly bolster their rotation in hopes to climb the standings in the National League Central.
