Pittsburgh Pirates: How They Were Built

2015 Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates are off to a 4-6 start in the first 10 games of the 2015 season.  They are looking to perhaps make it into the playoffs again.  Many of the players on the roster were drafted by the Pirates and brought up through their system.

Starting Pitchers

Francisco Liriano – Signed as a free agent in December of 2014.  Career record of 76-73 with an ERA of 4.05.

Vance Worley – Purchased from the Minnesota Twins in March of 2014.  Career record of 27-23 with an ERA of 3.82.

Jeff Locke – Acquired in trade with the Atlanta Braves in 2009.  Career record of 19-19 with an ERA of 3.98.

Gerrit Cole – Drafted in the first round as the first overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2011 draft.  Career record 22-12 with an ERA of 3.45.

A.J. Burnett – Signed as a free agent with the Pirates in November of 2014.  Career record of 155-151 with an ERA of 4.03.

Bullpen

Mark Melancon (CL) – Acquired in a trade with the Boston Red Sox in 2012.  Career record of 16-14 with an ERA of 2.97 and 70 saves.

Tony Watson – Drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth round of the 2007 draft.  Career record 20-8 with an ERA of 2.67 and four saves.

Jared Hughes – Drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fourth round of the 2006 draft.  Career record of 11-11 with an ERA of 2.90.

Antonio Bastardo – Acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies in December of 2014.  Career record of 20-18 with an ERA of 3.70.

Radhames Liz – Signed as a free agent with the Pirates in December of 2014.  Career record of 6-9 with an ERA of 7.47.

Starting Lineup

Francisco Cervelli (C) – Acquired in a trade with the New York Yankees in November of 2014.  Career average of .278 with 10 home runs and 93 RBI.

Pedro Alvarez (1B) – Drafted in the first round by the Pirates in the 2008 draft.  Career average .235 with 107 home runs and 329 RBI.

Neil Walker (2B) – Drafted in the first round by the Pirates in the 2004 draft.  Career average .272 with 78 home runs and 351 RBI.

Josh Harrison (3B) – Acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs in 2009.  Career average .280 with 21 home runs and 99 RBI.

Jordy Mercer (SS) – Drafted in the third round by the Pirates in the 2008 draft.  Career average .262 with 21 home runs and 89 RBI.

Starling Marte (LF) – Signed by the Pirates as an amateur free agent in 2007.  Career average .277 with 31 home runs and 110 RBI.

Andrew McCutchen (CF) – Drafted in the first round by the Pirates in the 2005 draft.  Career average .298 with 130 home runs and 469 RBI.

Gregory Polanco (RF) – Signed by the Pirates as an amateur free agent in 2009.  Career average .231 with seven home runs 35 RBI.

Projected Bench

Chris Stewart (C) – Acquired in a trade with the New York Yankees in 2013.  Career average .228 with eight home runs and 61 RBI.

Corey Hart (1B/OF) – Signed as a free agent by the Pirates in December of 2014.  Career average .271 with 161 home runs and 563 RBI.

Jung Ho Kang (IF) – Signed as an amateur free agent in 2015.  Career average .111 in just nine plate appearances so far in 2015.

Sean Rodriguez (IF/OF) – Acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels in December 2014.  Career average .226 with 45 home runs and 186 RBI.
