Prospects on Deck: SS Jake Cronenworth – Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays drafted Jake Cronenworth in the 7th round of the 2015 MLB June Amateur draft out of Michigan University.

That summer he was sent to Hudson Valley Renegades (Low A) of the New York Penn League and batted .291, with 31 runs, 12 doubles, three triples, a home run, and 16 RBI in 51 games. He was also named to the Mid Season All-Star Game.

In 2016, the St. Clair, MI native was promoted to the Bowling Green Hot Rods for 81 games and he batted .322, 66 runs, 15 doubles, six triples, three home runs, 48 RBIs and 54 walks. He was then sent to Class A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs and in 35 games he batted .171, with three doubles, a triple, home run and nine RBIs. He was once again selected to another All-Star game, this time for the Midwest League.

This season, the Rays kept Cronenworth with the Stone Crabs and he has rewarded their decision by hitting safely in his first 13 games, with eight multi-hit games in the span. On the season he is batting .431 (22 for 51), with 15 runs, two doubles, and an RBI.

The 23 year old lead-off hitter’s hot has him on the leader board in the Florida State League in Batting Average (.431) Runs (15), Hits (22), OBP (.540), and second in walks (12) and OPS (1.049).

Cronenworth is an exciting young bat in the Rays farm system who is on the right track in his development process. Good things in store for the Michigan native.
