The Philadelphia Phillies have a prospect in their farm system that is ready to take flight and it may happen in the upcoming 2015 season. This special player is third baseman Maikel Franco.

Franco, a native of Azua, Dominican Republic, was signed by the Phillies as a teenager and at 17 years old he played his first pro season in their Gulf Coast rookie league and in 53 games he batted .222.  In 2011, he moved between Low Class A Williamsport Crosscutters and full season Class A Lakewood BlueClaws and combined he batted .247 in 71 games.

The 2012 season would be the year that Franco would see his stock start to rise as he batted .280, with 32 doubles, 14 home runs, and 84 RBIs in 132 games with the BlueClaws.

In 2013 he was promoted to start the season with Class A Advanced Clearwater Threshers and in 65 games he batted .299, with 16 home runs and 52 RBI’s, before moving up to Double A Reading Fightin Phils where he put up an additional 15 home runs and 51 RBI’s while batting .339. He would finish the season batting .320, with 31 home runs and 103 RBI’s.

The 22-year old Franco was rewarded for his rise through the system in 2014 as he started the season with the Triple A Lehigh Valley IronPigs and batted .257 with 33 doubles, 16 home runs and 78 RBI’s.

The Phillies #3 prospect ventured over to the Caribbean Winter League in his native Dominican Republic and during their regular season play he batted .272 with seven home runs and 29 RBI’s in 38 games. He is currently in the league championship with the Gigantes del Cibao against the Estrellas de Oriente, with the winner heading to the upcoming Caribbean Series to be held in Puerto Rico.

After his time with the Caribbean League is over, Franco will head over to the Phillies Spring Camp with a chance to win the third base job. The odds look good in his favor especially if he carries over his hot hitting from winter ball.
