Red Sox Could Promote Rafael Devers and Michael Chavis Soon

According to reports, the Red Sox are soon to be making a move that would impact the Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A) and the Salem Red Sox (High-A). The Portland Press Herald reports that Rafael Devers is soon to be promoted with Michael Chavis right behind him.

Boston’s top prospect, Devers, is already performing at a stellar pace this year. However, like the Portland Press Herald mentions, the Red Sox could keep him in Double-A to build confidence since he is only 20 years old.

Although, when you look at his numbers you wouldn’t think it is a 20 year old hitting the way he his. He is slashing .308/.370/.540 with 10 homers and 38 RBI in 53 games. At this point of the season, right before the All-Star break, that is above average.

Then you have another stud in the Red Sox system who is playing third base a lot more than just here and there. He has become what seems to be the Red Sox “next big thing” if things don’t work well with Devers at third either in Triple-A or at the Major League level.

That player is Michael Chavis.

Chavis, the Red Sox No. 10 prospect, is killing it with the High-A Salem Red Sox where he is slashing .340/.408/.680 and leads the Carolina League in homers (15), runs batted in (51), and many other categories for Salem.

A source was asked a week ago if they thought Chavis would get promoted to Double-A anytime soon and they said, “It is wholly dependent on what the Red Sox do with Devers.” They added, “As of right now, don’t think it will happen, but don’t be surprised to see it happen if Devers gets a promotion.”

Now the rumors swirl — even though Devers is 20, would they take the risk of promoting him to Triple-A or do they just want to keep things in place with the way they are currently? As of now, it is a win-win for everyone involved. It is a win-win for Boston, a win-win for Portland and their fan base, and it is a win-win for Salem and their fan base.

It has been mentioned while the Carolina League All-Star break is taking place, which is from June 19-21, that Chavis could get promoted and the first half of the season would be finished up with Salem either winning or finishing second in the Carolina League Northern division. The Double-A All-Star break is not until July 10-12.

There is no timetable on a potential call-up for either Devers or Chavis but like the Portland Press Herald stated, it seems like the days are numbered, if not already up for Devers and Chavis.
