Red Sox To Sign Yoan Moncada
- Updated: February 23, 2015

The Boston Red Sox and 19-year old Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada, have reportedly reached an agreement on a deal. According to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com, the bonus figure reached is in the $30 million range. From what has been told since Moncada has been talked about, is the fact that the team that signs him will also be on the hook for approximately the same amount in luxury tax. The Red Sox are now restricted from any more international signings of more than $300k through the 2017 signing period.

It was thought the New York Yankees may have been the front-runner to land Moncada’s services, so signing with the Red Sox was a little bit of a surprise considering the other moves they made this winter. Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports mentioned that Moncada could take over at third base and Pablo Sandoval could switch to DH once David Ortiz retires. Moncada can also play second base and left field, but with both positions filled already for the next five-plus years with Dustin Pedroia and Hanley Ramirez, third seems the most logical.
Moncada will most likely spend 2015 in the Red Sox minor league system and it may be another season or so before we see him in the major leagues. Moncada is 6’1, 210 lbs and is a switch-hitter. During the 2013-14 Serie Nacional in Cuba, Moncada hit .273/.365/.406. Statistics courtesy of MLB Network.
