Rockies Top Prospect Jon Gray Still Finding His Way
- Updated: April 16, 2015
The Colorado Rockies rewarded their top pitching prospect Jon Gray with a promotion this season to their Triple-A affiliate, Albuquerque Isotopes, after posting a 10-5 record with Double-A Tulsa Drillers in 2014.
But the next level has not been as friendly to the 23-year old prospect. Gray has appeared in two games so far for the Isotopes, including Wednesday night and so far he is 0-1, with a 9.00 ERA.
In his first outing of the season on April 9th against Reno Aces, Gray came in relief of Jorge De La Rosa and tossed four innings, and allowed five runs on eight hits, with a walk and four strike outs.
On Wednesday, Gray started against Tacoma Rainiers and this outing was a step in the right direction as he threw five innings, allowing four runs, on four hits, while walking four and striking out four. But the Isotopes scored five runs in the bottom of the first to take a 5-4 lead on Tacoma. In the bottom of the sixth, the Isotopes added another run to make the score 6-4, but Tacoma scored two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 6-6 and halt any chance for Gray’s first Triple-A victory.
The Isotopes did score a run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 7-6 lead and seal the victory to improve to 4-2 on the season.
