South Atlantic League Pitcher of The Week: RHP Michael King – Marlins

The Miami Marlins drafted right hander Michael King in the 12th round of the 2016 MLB June Amateur draft out of Boston College.

After the draft, King pitched for the Gulf Coast League Marlins (Rookie – 4 games), New York Penn League Batavia Muckdogs (Low A – 10 games) and the South Atlantic League Greensboro Grasshoppers (Class A Full – 1 game) and combined he was 3-3, with a 4.11 ERA, one save, and 20 strikeouts in 30.2 innings, spanning 15 appearances.

The Marlins sent King back to the Muckdogs to start the 2017 season and he has not disappointed as he has appeared in three games (2 starts), is 2-0, with a 0.00 ERA. He has tossed 13 shutout innings, allowed four hits, two walks and 18 strikeouts.  Opponents are batting just .095 against him and he also has a 0.46 WHIP.

Spanning the last week of April 10-16th, King started two games, one on April 10th and the other on April 15th.

On the 10th, King earned his first win of the season, tossing five innings, allowing just two hits, no runs, one walk and nine strikeouts. He struck out the side twice in the, first in the opening frame, and then again in the fourth inning.

On the 15th, the Rochester, NY native pitched the first game of a doubleheader against the Lakewood BlueClaws and threw a complete game shutout. King threw seven innings, allowing two hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. King retired the first 14 batters he faced, before allowing a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

He then worked his way out of sixth inning trouble, before retiring the side in the 7th inning to secure his second win of the season.
