If the New York Mets are looking to become true contenders in the second half of the season, the key will be getting quality starts from their pitching rotation as they received on Friday night from Noah Syndergaard.

“Thor”, as he is known to Mets fans, dominated the Arizona Diamondbacks tossing eight strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits with 13 strikeouts while hitting the gun consistently in the high 90’s.

In the first, Syndergaard gave up a lead-off double to A.J. Pollock, who then scored on a sac fly off the bat of All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. After a two-out single to Yasmany Torres, Thor then struck out Jake Lamb on an 81 MPH curveball to end the inning.

The Mets put up four runs in the bottom half of the inning highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Lucas Duda (3-run shot) and Michael Cuddyer (solo shot).

Syndergaard settled down and kept the D-Backs from crossing the plate by working his way frame by frame around hits and walks to shut down Arizona. In the sixth inning, he struck out the side using his repertoire of pitches effectively.

From the sixth into the eighth, he retired nine straight batter before giving up a walk to Pollock. He then struck out David Peralta and got Goldschmidt to pop up to catcher Kevin Plawecki to end the inning and his night.

The D-Backs scored a run off closer Jeurys Familia in the top of the ninth, but he settled down to give Syndergaard his fourth win on the season and also earn his 25th save of the season.

Noah Syndergaard is in a groove with his third straight win and dominating major league hitters, just what Mets fans have been waiting for.
