The Name Game- Shirley Ellis

The Gulf Coast League has a number of very interesting names this year.

The GCL Pirates, based in Bradenton feature a righthanded pitcher named Mister Luciano
(yep, Mister is his given name).

Brevard County’s GCL Nationals have a pitcher named Joan Baez (no, not the folk singer).

The Yankees have two GCL teams based at the Himes Complex in Tampa, and they do not disappoint….Yankees 1 have pitchers named IceZack Flemming, Hobie Harris and Deshorn Lake. Yankees 2 has a pitcher who has converted from being a position player but has kept his great name, Claudio Custodio.

Lakeland’s Gulf Coast Tigers feature pitcher Toller Boardman and infielder Giancarlo Brignoni (the second most famous Giancarlo playing professional baseball in Florida).

The GCL Astros, based at Houston’s complex in Kissimmee on the famed Irlo Bronson Highway are stocked with classic names….Pitchers Diogenes Almengo, Starlying Sanchez and Dylan James and infielder Wander Franco.

Orlando’s GCL Braves trot out pitcher Evertz Orozco.

St. Louis’ entry, based in Jupiter, the GCL Cardinals are led by pitchers Silas Bohannan and Max Foody.

Not to be topped by their Jupiter mates, the Marlins have some great monikers….pitchers Gunnar Kines and Obed Diaz and infielder Alex Fernandez (not the former White Sox and Marlins pitcher).

St. Lucie’s Mets GCL affiliate are fully stocked as well…pitchers Merandy Gonzalez and Sixto Torres (maybe named after ex-Brewers outfielder Sixto Lezcano? ), and infielder Luis Crisostomo.

The GCL Phillies, playing at Clearwater’s Carpenter Complex have pitchers Jacob Wagenspack, Bailey Falter, and Seranthony Dominguez and outfielder Greg Pickett.

Dunedin’s GCL Blue Jays have quality not quantity with pitchers Hansel Rodriguez and Griffin Glaude.

Closer to home, Port Charlotte’s GCL Rays could field a battery of pitcher Jeffry Done (pronounced Don-Yay) and catcher Blake Grant-Parks. Grant Park in Chicago could not be reached for comment.

Sarasota’s GCL Orioles are loaded with pitchers Wendell Floranus, Ofelky Peralta, Jay Flaa, Grey Fenter and infielder Ryan Mountcastle.

And finally , Lee County’s two GCL affiliates, the Red Sox and Twins are no slouches. The Red Sox have thus far fielded outfielders Danny Mars, Jagger Rusconi (gee, I wonder who HE was named after?), and Raiwinson Lameda and pitcher Yankory Pimentel.

The Twins have had pitchers Matz Schutte, and Lachlan Wells, infielders Trey Cabbage and Travis Blankenhorn and outfielder Lean Marrero. On the All-Name 60 day disabled list for the Twins is pitcher Brusdar Graterol.

Not bad for one professional baseball league. They carry on in the great tradition of my two all time favorite baseball names, current Atlanta Braves pitcher Sugar Ray Marimon and former Pittsburgh Pirates minor league infielder Henry Henry.
