Tigers Sweep Twins and Start Season 3-0

The Detroit Tigers opened up the 2015 season at home against the Minnesota Twins and all they did was outscore them 22-1, on 35 hits, to sweep the three-game series.

The Tigers pitching staff actually kept the Twins off the scoreboard for 24 straight innings in the series before Minnesota scored in the seventh inning of Thursday’s Tiger victory.

Detroit took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Anthony Gose scored on a pop up single by J. D. Martinez to second baseman Brian Dozier, and Ian Kinsler scored on a single to left field by Yoenis Cespedes.

In the bottom of the second inning, Victor Martinez singled on a line drive to center fielder Jordan Schafer and Anthony Gose scored again.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers added three more runs to extend their lead to 6-0. Gose scored his third run of the game after Victor Martinez hit into a double play and J.D. Martinez hit his second home run on the season to help pad the lead. In the fifth, they would score their final run of the game on a line drive RBI single by Alex Avila plating Nick Castellanos, who tripled to lead off the inning.

The Twins managed their solo run of the series in the seventh, when Kennys Vargas doubled to left field to score Joe Mauer, who walked earlier in the inning.

Tigers starter Shane Greene, who made his major league debut with the New York Yankees last season, won his first game of the season by tossing eight innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits, with one walk and five strikeouts.

In the series, Tigers pitchers combined for 27 innings, allowing 14 Hits, one unearned run, one walk and  20 strikeouts. Just a dominating performance from the Detroit pitching staff.
