The United States entered the quarterfinal round having won three of the five 1st round games they played in their first appearance in the WBSC Premier 12 tournament. The U.S., who is ranked second in the world behind powerhouse Japan, used great pitching and a late charge to move on in the tournament.

Starter Zack Segovia, who played in 2015 with the El Paso Chihuahuas, a Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, won his second tournament game, tossing five innings, allowing one run, on three hit, and three strikeouts. Brooks Pounders, a prospect who played in Double-A in 2015 with the World Champion Kansas City Royals, came in relief and tossed four shutout innings allowing just one hit, a walk and struck out three batters. Both pitchers shut down the Netherlands and WBSC top hitter Randolph F.J. Oduber, a prospect with the Washington Nationals, keeping him hitless.

At the plate, the U.S. received run scoring at bats from Jacob May, Adam Frazier, Matt McBride and Tyler Pastornicky to put the game away late, pulling away with a 6-1 victory and advancing to the Semi-Finals.

Now the United States face Mexico, who shocked undefeated Canada with three runs late to also advance to the semis. Both the U.S. and Mexico will play either November 19 or the 20th.  Stay tuned for details.
