A party is what it looked like in Monday’s lopsided 16-7 victory for the New York Mets over the Philadelphia Phillies.  The Mets banged out 20 hits and scored a season high 16 runs , while also enjoying David Wright‘s return to the line-up.

Captain Wright was back at third base and he couldn’t have had a better coming back party as his teammates seemed to just hit all night long.  But the Cap didn’t sit back, he also joined in the hitting fest with a monster shot into the left field upper deck on the third pitch he saw in his first at bat since his return from the DL, it was a moon shot.

The Mets saw themselves down early when the Phillies posted three early runs in the bottom of the first on Ryan Howard‘s three run shot, his 20th on the season. Very quickly, after the first three innings, the Mets were down 7-2, as Jacob deGrom pitched in his shortest outing of the season lasting only 2.2 innings, while being roughed up for seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, walked three and only struck out three and gave up three home runs. But the bullpen stopped the bleeding and it was the Mets turn showcase their recent firepower.

Over their last three games heading into Philadelphia, the Mets put on a hitting clinic as they scored 33 runs in Colorado, and starting in the top of the fourth the clinic continued.

After Wright homered in the second and Juan Lagares hit a solo shot in the third, the Mets took off with three in the fourth on Wilmer Flores‘ two run shot, his 13th on the season and Travis d’Arnaud‘s 8th on the year to make the score 7-5.

In the top of the fifth, Flores went yard again, hammering a three-run bomb to left scoring Daniel Murphy and Yoenis Cespedes to put the Mets in front 8-7. Michael Cuddyer then hit his 9th on the year, a solo shot to extend the lead to 9-7.

In the top of the sixth, the Mets just kept on rolling with another four run inning highlighted Murphy’s 10th home run on the season and d’Arnaud’s two-run double scoring Wright and Flores to make the score 13-7.

In the seventh the Mets tacked on another run on an RBI single from Lagares and in the ninth, Cespedes made sure he joined the home run barrage with his 24th on the season, a two-run majestic shot putting the Mets in the record books.

The Mets broke a team record with a combined eight home runs and 15 extra-base hits in the game and they did it without one of their hottest hitters in the line-up, Curtis Granderson, who had the night off.

In the last four games the Mets have scored 49 runs and are just on a tear with every player on the team helping out in some way or another. They also saw their first place lead go to 5.5 games as the Washington Nationals had the night off.

Since Cespedes joined the Mets on August 1, they are 15-6 and steam rolling towards the play-offs and finally have the offensive power to compliment their strong starting rotation.  And not to mention that their heart and soul, Captain Wright is back and ready to enjoy the run to the post-season.
