Newly signed infielder Yoan Moncada reported to the Red Sox spring training camp at jetBlue Park on Tuesday. He will undergo physicals in Fort Myers on Wednesday and in Boston later in the week before returning. Moncada will not work out with the major league club, instead working out with the minor league organization who begin drills on March 2nd. Boston also signed Moncada’s mentor, Carlos Mesa, a 27 year old outfielder who previously was in the Pittsburgh Pirates system between 2011 and 2013.

Hanley Ramirez, transitioning from his natural position of shortstop to left field took several ground balls and fly balls in jetBlue’s stadium outfield and made a nice over the shoulder catch during Tuesday’s workout. He has not yet attempted to play balls off the wall which is similar to Fenway Park’s left field wall.

Tuesday was also a day for a number of press conferences, including Sox owner John Henry (with famed attorney Alan Dershowitz looking on), general manager Ben Cherington and manager John Farrell, in his usual time.

Boston’s full squad reported on Tuesday, which meant the arrival of designated hitter David Ortiz. All 40-man roster and non-roster invitees are now in camp in anticipation of Wednesday’s first full squad workout which begins at approximately 9 AM on jetBlue Park’s Fenway South Complex. A minor league early camp takes the field after the major league spring group finishes.

Tuesday afternoon was reserved for interviews and some additional work on the field by the grounds crew and stadium maintenance crew updating outfield signage. The Red Sox open spring play in one week, with a doubleheader featuring split squad games versus Northeastern University and Boston College. BC head coach Mike Gambino is a former Red Sox minor league infielder.

After an off day on Wednesday March 4th, the Sox Grapefruit League schedule begins with a night game on the 5th at the Minnesota Twins newly refurbished home six miles away. Boston’s home schedule starts on Friday March 6th against the Miami Marlins.

In other baseball news, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed former Blue Jays righthander Dustin McGowan on the heels of their acquisition of ex-Braves starter Brandon Beachy, coming off Tommy John surgery. The Dodgers also announced righty Chris Withrow was placed on the disabled list. Ditto Rangers infield prospect Jurickson Profar who was also sidelined the entire 2014 season. The Braves, who were hit with a rash of TJ surgeries last season added another already as it was announced righty Shae Simmons will miss the season.
