Update March 13 – 2:25 pm

It is official, MLB.com reported on Friday that Yu Darvish will undergo Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery on Tuesday and will miss the entire 2015 season.

It seems like every single spring in recent memory, news of another pitcher possibly requiring Tommy John surgery makes headlines.  Apparently 2015 is no different, as Texas Rangers ace Yu Darvish may be the next one.  Saturday morning, the story was all about Darvish and the spraining of his UCL in his elbow, which potentially will lead to having season-ending surgery.

Darvish was quoted saying “I will be disappointed if I have to miss the season but want to look at all options, including getting a second opinion”.  There is an option that involves rest, but Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star states that the Rangers are expect him to miss at least four months depending on what route is chosen.  According to MLBNetwork, 24 players have received Tommy John surgery since January 1, 2014.

The Rangers are going to have decisions to make long-term if Darvish goes the surgery route.  They were linked as possible trade candidates for Cole Hamels of the Phillies and even Dillon Gee of the Mets, but it doesn’t appear that any moves will be made until Darvish reaches his decision.  The sooner that happens the better for everyone within the organization.  Rangers GM Jon Daniels gave the potential three choices Darvish has to choose from.  “One is to attempt to pitch through it, which is not a great option.  Two, would be an effort for rest and rehab.  I think the sentiment is that is effectively what we did in the fall and in the winter and up until two days ago, we had very good results with it.  The third option would be Tommy John surgery.”darvish 2

Texas has had their share of bad luck to say the least.  In addition to all of the injuries they had to battle that ultimately led to their disappointing 67-95 record in 2014, they learned earlier this winter that they would be without Jurickson Profar as he will require season-ending shoulder surgery.  It has been a disheartening collapse over the last couple of seasons that could take a long time to come back from.

Darvish, 28, has been in the major leagues for three seasons and has a record of 39-25 in 83 starts, with an ERA of 3.27.  He has made three straight All-Star teams and has recorded 680 strikeouts in 545.1 innings in his career.  He missed the last seven weeks of the 2014 season with an elbow injury.

The Texas Rangers aren’t the only ones that will miss Yu Darvish on the mound every fifth day, baseball in general will.  The game needs its young stars, and the fact that he is an international sensation doesn’t help this situation either.
